Saturday, June 8, 2002 - PA @ Golden West Invitational, Sacramento, CA - Juanita Broaddus, William Penn, gets 3rd in both the 100 (11.63 +2.5) and 200 (24.17 +1.3); while Villa Maria's Kim Malcolm gets a big PR in the mile, going 4:58.46, finishing 11th in the elite field. Sunday, May 19, 2002 - Philadelphia Catholic League Championships @ Widener University - Cardinal O'Hara came up just three points shy of pulling off a clearn sweep of the PCL team championships from XC to indoor and outdoor. The boys and girls both captured the PCL XC and Indoor champs, and the boys clearly won the outdoor title. But it was Archbishop Ryan's depth that refused to lose as O'Hara finished 3rd in the 4x400, but needed 1st to win the title. Individually, Archbishop Carroll's Maurice Stovall ran one of the fastest 400's in the state this season, in a one-on-one duel with McDevitt's Tariq Boston 48.08-48.85. Dougherty's James Jefferson captured both the 100 (11.03-Boston:11.13) and 200 (21.99). O'Hara's Craig Haywood won the High Jump, clearing 6-02 and the Long Jump, leaping 20-06.50. Nicole Leach, West Catholic (56.61 400/62.19 400H); Karon Lugay, O'Hara (12.23 100/25.00 200); an Denise Tetkowski, Ryan 17-02.00 LJ/34-07.25 TJ), were all double winners. Saturday, May 18, 2002 - Friends' League Championships @ Villa Maria - Dan Mays and Ray Bobrownicki won four individual events for Westtown. Mays took the shot put (41-2), the discus (130-2), the javelin (146-1) and the pole vault (11-0). Bobrownicki set a meet record in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 8 inches, breaking his own mark set last year of 6-6. He also won the long jump (20-6), the triple jump (41-101/2), and the 110-meter hurdles (15.2 seconds). In the girls' meet, the Quakers won seven of 17 events, including the pole vault, in which Anna Leinberger broke her meet record of 7-3 set last year when she crossed the bar at 8-0. George School's Betty Rogers was the only multiple winner, taking the long jump (15-11/4), triple jump (33-3) and shot put (31-9). Results.

Saturday, May 18, 2002 - Inter-Academic League @ Penn Charter - Chestnut Hill's Pete Harris won the George Anderson Award for scoring the most individual points with 18. He captured 100-meter dash in 10.92, the 200 in 22.71 seconds, and the in 51.15. Lex Mercado, Penn Charter was a double champ, taking the 1,600-meter in 4:30.84 and the 3,200-meter in 9:55.18. Bishop Shanahan's Eric Fleming won his first District 1 championship, set PRs in both the 3200 (9:16.58) and 1600 (4:16.71), and is ready to take on the state's best in Shippensburg next week. But get this! He was 2nd with that 9:16. To Coateville senior Rob Robertson (below), who went 9:14.54 (off a 2:10 closing 800) to win the 3200. (He was 5th in the 1600 in 4:22.72). Rob will mix it up with Dan Mazzocco next week in the 32, while Fleming has selected a head-to-head with Sam Bair in the 4-lapper.

Tamaqua's 4x800 is the defending AA state champs. With two new members this season, they looked just as strong at the District 11 AA championships 5/16 @ Blue Mountain HS.

 

Saturday, May 18, 2002 - District 10 AA Championships @ Hickory High School - It appears that AA XC Champ and Footlocker Finalist Andy Weilacher is back in the groove after his serious car accident almost six months ago. He held off the Jed Christiansen, the younger brother of AA XC Champ Jesi of Greenville by just over three seconds, going 9:27.62 to win the 3200. In the sprints, Lavonne Rowan of Mercyhurst Prep had a great double, going 10.66 and 22.24. For the girls, Jesi continued her quest to repeat as outdoor 3200 champ with an 11:17.87. Sharon's Morgan Bradley went 12.84 and 26.27. In the mid-distance events, Leah Kerstetter took the 800 in 2:22.02 and the 1600 in 5:13.07; while in the hurdles, it was Melissa Sopher of Slippery Rock notching two wins, 15.06 and 45.18. Saturday, May 18, 2002 - District 9 AA Championships @ Clarion University - Cody Roberts, a Smethport junior, captured three events, the 100 in 11.44, the 200 in 23.45, and the 400 in 51.84. The girls also boasted a triple champ, Erin Carter of Ridgway Area, who went 27.08 (200), 15.73 (100H), and 47.69 (300H). Girls double winners included Jen Friedl of Elk County, the champ of the Discus (105-06), and the the Javelin (112-11); Emily Pfeufer, an Elk County sophomore, who took the Long Jump (16-01.75) and Triple Jump (35-02.00); and Erica Hoffman, also an Elk County soph, the champ in the 1600 (5:30.04) and the 3200 (12:14.64). Saturday, May 18, 2002 - District 4 AA Championships @ Montoursville High School - Central Columbia's Osagie Osunde, a senior, was a triple winner, taking home the championship in the Long Jump (20-10.50), the Triple Jump (44-06.50), and the Javelin (178-00.00). Teammate Jeff Baird won the 110 Hurdle in 15.07 and the 300 Hurdles in 39.96. North Penn's Chris Cummings won the 800 in 2:01.28 and the 1600 in a very strong 4:19.71. Lewisburg distance specialist Ashleigh Wetzel, easily won the 1600 in 5:04.47 and the 800 in 2:20.24. Ashley Janasko of Sayre Area, won the short sprint, going 13.08 and 26.83. In the field, Cori Brago of Warrior Run, took the Shot Put (35-08.00) and the Discus (118-11.00). Results

Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Susquehanna Valley League Championships @ Montoursville High School - Charity Payne of Selinsgrove, continued to improve her season's best, winning the Shot Put with a throw of 43-11.25. Junior Ashleigh Wetzel of Lewisburg, rolled through the 1600 field, winning by over 18 seconds with her 5:03.32. But it was younger sister Abby Wetzel, a sophomore, who was the closest. Ashleigh also took the 3200, going 11:43.82; and anchored her team to the winning 4x800 in 9:40.56. Montoursville 11th grader Christa Sawko took both the 400 (1:00.48) and the 300 Hurdles (46.69). For the boys, Montoursville's Steve Huffman won the 100 (11.25) and 200 (22.86). He was 2nd in the 400 with a 50.67. Teammate Eric Baker took the one-lapper with his 50.06, and also captured the 800 with his 1:58.30. The 1600 and 3200 belonged to Lewisburg sophomore Chris Spooner, who went four laps in 4:24.26 and eight laps in 9:49.81. As did teammate Ashleigh Wetzel, he anchored Lewisburg to the winning 4x800, which went 8:12.59 with three sophomores and a freshman. Columbia senior Jeff Baird owned the 110 Hurdles (15.40) and the 300 Hurdles (40.03). Winning the unusual double of Long Jump and Javelin was Columbia senior Osagie Osunde (21-01.00 + 178-04). Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Lebanon-Lancaster League @ Hempfield HS (3) - Gordon Hall and Patrick Link of Warwick, went one-two in the 800 at 1:56.0 and 1:56.4, respectively. Then they teamed with Gallagher and Hess to lead Warwick to a 7:56.7 4x800. Teammate Brad ZImmerman unleashed a 208-05 Javelin. Hempfield's Justin Kiscadden took the 100 in 10.8 (Jaren Hayes, Cedar Crest-21.7) and the 200 in 21.5. The 1600 and 3200 belonged to Pat Clark of Cedar Crest, who went 4:21.3 and 9:38.0. Hempfield's Theo Dickerson won the Long Jump (20-10.50) and Triple Jump (44-01.00). For the girls, Tracie Saunders of Manheim Township cleared a 11-00 Pole Vault. Jenelle Stoner of Cocalico was a double winner, taking the Shot Put with a throw of 38-02.00 and the Discus, going 122-04. She was also 2nd in the Javelin (123-06). In the Sprints, Shannon Norris of Warwick went 24.8 and 57-0; while in the 1600 and 3200, Manheim Township's Renee Spangler was a double victor, going 5:09.5 and 11:17.0. Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Suburban One League-Patriot Division - Suburban One League Patriot Division girls set six meet records, while the boys established four new event marks in the division championship meet at Council Rock High School. The Pennsbury girls broke North Penn's death grip on the trophy for the first time since 1994, when Pennsbury also won the title. The Falcons had 129 points on the day and 145 overall, including two dual meet wins. The Knights, undefeated in duals, totaled 107 points in the meet and 139 overall. Individually, Pennsbury dominated the sprints, sweeping the top three places in the 100 and 200. Andi Glick (12.2, 25.4), Jamie LaTorre (12.5, 26.0) and Sara Kirsch (12.7, 26.1) did the damage each time. The Falcons' 4x100, with LaTorre, Rachel Zeldin, Kiera Watson and Glick, broke Bensalem's 14-year-old meet record with a 49.2. Kirsch did not run on the relay so she could compete in the LJ (2nd, 17-3) and TJ (1st, 35-8). Pennsbury also swept the HJ, led by Watson's 5-3. Kourtney Marquis took the PV (10-0), while Rebecca Powell won the 800 (2:17.8) and took second in the 1,600 (5:11.2). Rock's Jessica Cickay doubled in the 1,600 (5:08.9) and 3,200 (11:20.2) as the Indians took three of the top five in each event, much to the delight of Pennsbury coach Tim Cass. North Penn managed only three scorers combined in the two distance events. Also, the Rock foursome of Lydia Blandy, Lindsay Blum, Dara Kruman and Cickay contined to improve in the 4x800 with a record 9:24.4. North Penn did get a big effort from Jessica Johnson, who set meet records in the SP and discus (42-7, 129-1). Teammate Jackie Bryant was second in both. The Knights got a record 3:58.4 in the 4x400, too. Neshaminy's Beth Foster set the meet record with the new javelin (122-1). That distance would have been the new standard with the old JAV, too. In the boys division, the powerful North Penn squad blew out the field with 163 points for their seventh straight Patriot championship. Host Council Rock was second with 95. Matt Henderson was the Knights' lone individual double winner with his 100 and 200 titles (10.8, 21.7). The latter time knocked Bensalem's Keith Davis out of the record book. Davis still holds the 400 mark (48.3) in the division and shares the 100 with Pennsbury's Troy Vincent (10.6). Pennsbury's Andrew Thomas came within a whisker of that 400 record however with his 48.5. Rock's Mike DiDio cranked out a 4:18.0 1,600, outdueling NP's Dan Michael (4:20.1) as Steve Craig shut it down when DiDio passed him on the third lap. Rock's Rob Hampson was third (4:21.5), then came back to take the 3,200 (9:44.0) in a CR sweep. Craig and Michael got DiDio back in the 800 (1:57.1, 1:57.5 and 1:58.0). North Penn also got meet records from Zach Thomas in the 110HH (14.3) and the 4x100 (42.7, bettering the 43.1 of Davis' 1996 Bensalem team). West's Kyle McNealy set the new JAV record (169-4) although the retired mark was well over 200 feet with the old implement. Results and summary courtesy of Bill Kenny.

Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Suburban One League-Colonial Division @ William Tennent - Troy Roberson of the host school, held off Abington's Lester Caesar in the 400, going 47.89 to win by .33. Roberson also took the 100 in 11.06. Other double winners were Tony Bria, William Tennent in the 110 and 300 Hurdles (15.08 38.69); Lloyd Christopher, Pennridge, in the Long and Triple Jumps (20-05.25 41-05.50); and Ed Ruiz, William Tennent, in the Shot Put and Discus (50-11.25 173-06). Getting top points in four events, Pennridge's Brooke Wolfe went 16.02 in the 100 Hurdles, 45.85 in the 300 Hurdles, 16-06 in the LJ, and 36-10 in the TJ. Krystal Woods, William Tennent won three events, the Shot Put (35-09.50< the Discus (126-08), and the Javelin (127-01). Takia Brooks, Abington, captured the 100 in 12.49, the 200 in 25.04, and led off the winning 4x400 Relay which won in 3:59.43. Central Bucks East distance runner Val Myers took the 800 in 2:26.17, 5:20.05 in the 1600, and was 3rd in the 3200. Top Six Results.

Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Suburban One League-Freedom Division @ Upper Dublin - Wissahickon's Erin Franklin worked a nice double win, taking the 3200 in a strong 10:54.77, and the 1600 in 5:11.89. She also ran the first 800 in the winning 3200 Relay with teammates Michele Polish, Jen Douse, and Lindsay Dickey, which went 9:51.7. Alex Baptiste, Wissahickon, took the Long Jump (16-10.50) and the Triple Jump (36-01). Upper Merion's Ashley Simon was a double victor, winning the Shot Put (34-04.50) and the Discus (110-06. Upper Dublin's Nehemiah Leary won three events, the 200 (21.89), the 400 (48.95) and the Long Jump (22-08). Double winners included Chris Duntzee, Upper Dublin, in the 110 Hurdles (15.29) and the 300 Hurdles (41.11); Mark Mullelly, Upper Moreland, in the 1600 (4:24.51) and the 3200 (9:40.26); and Blake Taylor, Methacton, in the Triple Jump (42-10) and the High Jump (6-02). Saturday, May, 11, 2002 - Suburban One League-Liberty Division @ Upper Dublin HS - Got points? If you have a Courtney Clark, then you're like Norristown. Well-nourished by four individual titles from the sprint-hurdle specialist. Clark's best effort was a 44.47 300 Hurdles. She also took the 100 Hurdles in 14.86, the 200 in 24.95 and the 400 in 57.61. Hatboro-Horsham's Janine Ricci captured both distance races, winning the 1600 in 5:10.67 and the 3200 in 11:34.26. Souderton's Heather Myers was the Discus (104-00) and Javelin (119-03) champ. For the boys, Jesse Patterson of Cheltenham, captured three individual titles: the 110 Hurdles (14.39), the 300 Hurdles (39.15), and the Long Jump (20-07.50). Plymouth Whitemarsh's Alex Fisher was the sprint no-hurdles sprint champ, going 11.24 and 22.06. He was also a member of the winning 4x100, which went 43.55. Results.

Saturday, May 11, 2002 - MCAC Invitational @ Hickory High School - Andrew Rademacher of the host school, became the 2nd PA athlete over 15-0 in the Pole Vault, going 15-01. Cassie Buckwalter of Wilmington, has the top two throws in the state this season, as she went 138-02 in the Discus. Double winners included Austin Papay of Sharon, 51-06 SP and 143-01 DT; and EJ McLaurin of Hickory, 14.98 100H and 39.95 300H. Results courtesy of Jeremy Jewell.

Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, 2002 - Southern Chester County League @ Oxford - Saturday, May 11, 2002 - Kim Malcolm of Villa Maria, closed out her league season with three wins, going 2:28.4, 5:18.8 and 11:35.7. Saturday, May 11, 2002 - PA Independents @ The Hill School - Westtown jump ace Ray Bobrownicki captured three first place finishes, winning the Long Jump (21-02), the Triple Jump (43-09) and the High Jump (6-04). West Catholic's John Jackson took both the 100 (10.9) and the 200 (22.9). For the girls, Aliesha Jackson of West Catholic won the 300 Hurdles in 48.7, the Triple Jump, going 33-02, and the High Jump, clearing 5-0. Loucks Games, White Plains, NY - William Penn's Juanita Broaddus was named the Meet's Outstanding Female Athlete after torching the track while slicing through windy conditions to take the 100 (11.85 semis/11.60 finals), 200 (24.53 prelims/24.37 semis/23.71 finals), and anchor the 4x100 to a come-from-behind win in 47.04. Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, 2002 - Bicentennial League Championships @ Holy Ghost Prep - Tiffany Abney of Merion Mercy, dominated her events, winning the 200 in 24.9, the 400 in 56.2 and the 300 Hurdles in 46.0 But it was teammate Evelyn Dwyer who pulled fellow teammate Kimarra McDonald to a fast finish in the 800, as they went 2:12.7 and 2:13.7, PA #'s 2 and 3. PA #1 is Dwyer's too. Gwynedd-Mercy went 9:26.9 in the 4x800. For the boys, Holy Ghost Prep's Bill Ference took the 800 in 2:02.5 and the 1600 in 4:36.4. Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, 2002 - District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) - The City League (PIAA District 8) Championships were fielded Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, at Oliver High School in Pittsburgh. Although the Schenley boys led 91-33 after the field events on Friday, Allderdice charged back in the running events on Saturday, edging Schenley 160-154. Allderdice swept both the 800 and the 1600 runs and took two of the top three spots in both the 300 intermediate hurdles and the 3200 run to complete the comeback. The Schenley girls, however, held off a similar charge by the Allderdice girls to hang on for a 165-159 win. In the process, Schenley won both the 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relays. Yvonne Ferguson of Westinghouse was a triple winner, running away with the 100 (12.5), 200 (25.05), and 400 (55.95) meter dashes, qualifying for the PIAA championships in the 200 and 400 and breaking a twenty-year old City record in the 400. Carmen Bruce of Schenley was also a triple winner, winning a close triple jump (32' 3.75") contest and hurling her way to lopsided wins in the shot put (43' 5.5") and discus (129' 4.25"), breaking her own City records in both. Additionally, she qualified for the PIAA championships in these events as well. Schenley's Donel Durham won the boys' discus (109' 3.6") and tied for first in the high jump (5' 8"). Allderdice's Adanna Scott won the girls' high jump (4' 9") and 300 intermediate hurdles (46.22), qualifying for the PIAA championships in the latter. In other running events, Peabody's Maurice Sales won the 100 meter (11.18) and 200 meter (22.85) dashes, qualifying for the PIAA championships in both events. Allderdice's Ian Wolfson won the 1600 meter (4:39.64) and 3200 meter (10:32) runs and will compete in the PIAA championship in the latter. Friday-Saturday, May 10-11, 2002 - Pioneer Athletic Conference @ Great Valley HS - Corey Rogers of Pottsgrove, captured both the 1600 (4:25.46) and the 3200 (9:43.65). The Hurdles also boasted a double winner, with an upset of sorts in the 300, as Justin Gibbs of Pottstown, narrowly beat Great Valley's Galen Rivers, 40.01 to 40.07. Perkiomen Valley's Matt Carroll won both the 200 (22.66) and the 400 (49.33). For the girls, Spring-Ford's Meghan O'Neil showd both leg speed and strength, finished third in the 400 less than a half-second from the win in 58.57, and taking the 800 in 2:19.28 and the 1600 in 5:21.29. Thursday, May 9, 2002 - Del-Val Qualifier @ Glen Mills - The host Glen Mills boy's took all three relays, 42.9, 3:35.3 and 8:29.1. Sun Valley's Chris Kessler won the 800 in 1:59.5 and the 3200 in 10:19.2, while Jerrold Gaines, Chichester, captured both the Long Jump (21-00.50) and Triple Jump, 43-07.00. For the girls, it was Kelly Magnin, Sun Valley, who was a triple winner, taking the 300 Hurdles in 48.l7, the 400 in 1:01.9 and the Long Jump, going 15-10.75. Chioma Nwaneshuidu of Penn Wood, took the 100 in 12.4 and the 200 in 26.3. The 1600 and 3200 were owned by Herman of Sun Valley, 5:54.3/12:41.1. Results.

Tuesday, May 7, 2002 - WPIAL Qualifiers (five meets @ various locations) - The WPIAL holds qualifiers for their district championships nine days in advance, with the top six in an event automatically moving on. There are three AAA qualifiers (North, Central, South), and two AA qualifiers (North, South). Most top athletes do their best simply to remain healthy, without expending too much effort. That's hard to imagine with an 800 time of 1:53.55 in the AAA Southern meet, but after his 1:50 two weeks ago, Sam Bair is simply in a class by himself. He also went 4:25 for a relaxed 1600 qualifier. In the AAA Central meet, Matt Evans of Hempfield ran a strong 1:53.2 to show his fitness level. In the AAA Northern girls qualifier, Stephanie Madia went 5:06 and 10:58.21 in advance in both events. The top Javelin effort for the girls came in same meet, as Butler's Holly Geibel achieved a 136.04. And in the girls' Central AAA, Amy Egan of Latrobe went 2:14.0 in the 800.

Saturday, May 4, 2002 - Lady Rocker Invitational @ Council Rock HS - In today's meet, Abington's Takia Brooks had a nice double in the 100 (12.0) and 200 (24.7), to go along with their 3:56.2 4x400 relay. Teammate Erica Aiken won a fast 400 (57.9) with six runners breaking a minute. Pennsbury's Sara Kirsch, who won four golds (100, LJ, TJ, 4x100) at the SOL Patriot meet last year, doubled in the LJ (17-5) and TJ (36-1). She was also third in the 100 (12.4). Bensalem's Shawna Ramsey, a sophomore, took second to Brooks in the 100 (12.1) and 200 (25.4), both strong performances for her. Tennent's Krystal Woods won her usual two golds -- disc (111-5) and javelin(122-3). Neshaminy's Gina Hoffman, another soph, was solid all-around. She took second in the LJ (a school record 17-5) only because Kirsch had a better back-up jump. Hoffman was also fourth in the 100 (12.6) and TJ (34-2). Saturday, May 4, 2002 - Wilkes-Barre Invitational @ Memorial Stadium - Gina Volpicelli of Hanover entered four events and won four events, taking the 200 in 26.4, the 400 in 59.5, the 100 Hurdles in 15.9 and the 300 Hurdles in 49.1. On the boys side, Scranton's Irvin Blackwell, took the short sprints, winning the 100 in 10.8 and the 200 in 22.4. Brian Tarulli of host Coughlin, won the 800 in 1:57.0, while Gary Malinko of Scranton Prep was 2nd in 1:58.6, but posted a PA#3 1600 time of 4:18.5. Saturday, May 4, 2002 - Lower Merion Invitational @ Lower Merion HS - During January, February and March, many fans of PA T&F were talking about Merion Mercy's Evelyn Dwyer. It's her senior year, so people expected a big effort. Well, she's baaaaack, and served notice at the Lower Merion Invitational, running alone and posting a state-leading 2:11.96 800. Teammate Kimarra McDonald was also under 2:20, going 2:18.37. Merion Mercy was 2nd to North Penn's squad in the 3200 Relay, which went 9:29.4. North Penn's Jessica Tower put the shot 42-04 for a victory. Conestoga's Steve Meyers was a double winner, taking first in the Discus with his 152-07, and in the Shot Put, boing 56-07.25. Neshaminy's Brian Kennelly took both the Long Jump (20-11) and the Triple Jump (41-00). For the girls, Karen Skully of Gwynedd-Mercy was victorious in the 100 (12.8) and the 200 (26.3). Saturday, May 4, 2002 - Mid-Atlantic Prep League - Multiple individual event championships abounded as Morris of Peddie, took the 100, 400 and Long Jump (11.0, 51.6, 20-07); Blair's Kerrigan took the 800 and 1600 (2:00.5, 4:34.6), Lawrenceville's Brown the 110 Hurdles and 400 Hurdles (15.4, 56.6), and Blair's Marshall the Javelin and Pole Vault (166-06, 12-00). Friday-Saturday, May 3-4, 2002 - Delaware County Girls' Track & Field Championships @ Penncrest HS - In a two-day format that helps prepare the athletes for similar trials and preliminaries at the upcoming District and State meets, Delaware County's girls' teams use the opportunity to test stategies. But usually fast, far and high will work just fine, as evidenced by the 4x800 show put on by Haverford (last year's state runner-up) and Cardinal O'Hara (last year's Delco champs). The Ford's foursome of Adriana Boyle, Rachel Giannascoli, Alicia York and Fiana York sizzled to a 9:23.5, a time they didn't post until the District meet last year. It broke Cardinal O'Hara's meet record set in 2001. O'Hara's Mary Debevec, Danielle Schopf, Bridgette Boudwin and Erin Kelly clocked 9:25.4, which would have won last year's PCL Champs by a lot. In the 4x100, Upper Darby broke an eight-year old meet record of Penn Wood's, going 47.8. Jannea Bridgeford anchored her mates Marissa McGarrell, Jen Lewis and Kellie Brown to help topple the record by a half second. Bridgeford was busy for the two days, surviving prelims and holding off two of Delaware County's best sprinters to capture the 100 and 200. Her 12.1 was .2 better than Chioma Nwaneshiudu of Penn Wood; while here 24.8 was just as close to the effort by O'Hara's Karon Lugay. Friday-Saturday, May 3-4, 2002 - Shaner Meet @ Wyomissing High School - Penn Relays' qualifiers Dane Miller of Schuylkill Valley and Jon Hart of Wyomissing, went one-two in the Shot Put, with Miller going 59-10.25 and Hart with a 58-03 performance. Hart also won the Discus with his 155-06 throw. Matt Renninger, the Boyertown sprinter, cruised through the two-days of trials and finals to capture the 100 in 10.85 and the 200 in 22.59. Thuy Nguyen of Exeter, took the 400 in 58.15 and the 800 in 2:19.10. Governor Mifflin's Nikki Stoyer won the 1600 in 5:09.51 and the 3200 in 11:15.46. Friday-Saturday, May 3-4, 2002 - Interboro Classic @ Interboro HS (boys only) - Strath Haven's Josh Hannum, the sprinter-soon-to-be-a-Nittany Lion, went under 11 three times in two days, the fastest in Friday's Preliminaries at 10.7. He need a 10.9 in the Prelims, and a 10.8 in the finals to hold off Upper Darby's Mike Jones. But he also had the 200 Semis and Finals, the latter which he won with his 21.9. Penncrest Hurdle specialist Steve Nichols earned the nod over Upper Darby's Kevin Booth in the 300 Hurdles as both were hand-timed in 39.2. Nichols didn't have the fastest times in the Prelims or the Semis, but that's not the point. His 14.5 took the Finals by .5 over Penncrest's Dave Sipe, who had gone 14.3 in the Prelims, 14.6 in the Semis, and 15.0 for 2nd in the Finals. Friday, May 3, 2002 - Baldwin Invitational @ Baldwin HS - Boys: Alan (as in Webb) and Dathan (as in Ritzenhein) reset the bar for American distance high schoolers. Now PA is listening, as Sam (as in Bair) and Dan (as in Mazzocco) have the best 1600-3200 in the state in many years. Bair, of Shaler HS, who went 1:50.4 800 (US#2) on 4/19, followed that up at the "Best of the West" Baldwin Invitational 5/3, going 4:09.69 for 1600. That's the current US#1. Converted it's believed to be the 2nd fastest mile in western PA prep history (Jerry Ritchie, North Allegheny, 4:10.6. Bair's converted mile would be 4:11.09.) Mazzocco, of host Baldwin, simply obliterated the field in the 3200 with his 9:05.73, which is currently a top 10 US time (remember the resurgence in prep distance standards?). Oh, and Bair also anchored his team's winning 4x400 to a 3:24.21 win. Girls: Not to be outdone, the scoring machine known as Sheena Gordon, McDowell, took matters on to her own feet, reeling off four wins, including two meet records. Her best performance had to be her US#3 effort of 42-03 in the Triple Jump. She also produced a 5-08 HJ, 18-02 LJ, and 14.43 100 Hurdles. In the distance races, Stephanie Madia of North Allegheny showed she is ready to defend her state AAA 1600 title before heading off to Notre Dame, holding off Jessica Perry of Peters Township, going 4:56.78 and US#8. Perry was also under 5:00, going 4:59.01. But she had another race, and whipped through the 3200 in a fast 10:53.53. Other notable performances included Melissa Sopher of Slippery Rock, who won the 300 Hurdles in 44.18. DeNia Matthews of Canon-McMillan was 2nd in 44.52. Great Valley took the turnpike west and also took three relays, the 4x100 in 50.01, the 4x400 in 3:59.8, and the 4x800 in 9:27.36. In the Javelin, Freedom's Ashley Kaufman continued her strong spring, winning with a throw of 144-04. Wilmington's Cassie Buckwalter took the Discus with a toss of 140-00. And Schenley's Carmen Bruce took the Shot, putting 43-01.25. Top PA vaulter Jocelyn Lindsay of Waynesburg cleared 11-02, a PA#2. Yvonne Ferguson of Westinghouse took the 200 and 400 in 25.34 and 56.75. Four girls finished under 2:20 in the 800 within a second of each other, with Upper St. Clair's Julie Cameron getting the nod in 2:19.16. Results.

Friday, May 3, 2002 - Bald Eagle High School Invitational @ Lock Haven University - The performances were affected on a very windy night on the hills above Lock Haven. In the Hurdles, Columbia's Jeff Baird took the 110 in 15.66 and the 300 in 40.67. Osagie Osunde of Central Columbia won both the Long Jump in 22-00.50 and the Triple Jump in 44-04.25. On the girls side, Trenton Central HS (NJ) came across I-80 and took the team title over Selinsgrove. Nikkia Barrett of the NJ school took the 100 Hurdles in 15.80, the High Jump with a 5-02 effort, and the Long Jump with her 18-07.75 performance. Thursday, May 2, 2002- Trojan Classic @ Wissahickon High School - Wissahickon freshman Krista Simkins showed a bit of what she was going to do to the girls' sprints several weeks at Villa Maria. But on May 2 at the Trojan Classic, she won three individual titles and anchored the winning 4x400 for her team. That's a feat in itself. But the times! 11.8 PA#2 in the 100. 23.6 PA#1+US#5 in the 200, and 55.4 PA#1+ US#15 in the 400. (Can't wait for States!) If Simkins has the sprints covered for Wissahickon, Erin Franklin is taking care of the distance races. Her 5:07.7 1600 and 10:51.6 3200 double were signs she's going to contend for a top spot on the state stage. And teammate Alex Baptiste took the Long Jump with a leap of 17-01 and the Triple Jump, going 36-08.25. Other notable performances were turned in by the Gwynedd-Mercy 4x800 squad of Meghan Bishop, Kelly McGrath, Katie Vernon, and Kristin Wall, who went 9:27.4. Wednesday, May 1, 2002 - PTFCA Colonial Classic @ Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS - Some great performances on the track and in the field during a rare mid-week invitational on the new track at Plymouth-Whitemarsh high school. Juliette Poussot of Agnes Irwin won two both the 100 and 200 in very fast times, going 12.16 and 24.85. Frosh Nicole Leach of West Catholic ran the fastest 300 Hurdles in PA so far this season, going 44.14.Pennsbury's Kourtney Marquis easily took the Pole Vault, clearing 11-0, while Downingtown's Sarah Easslen went 38-03.75 in the Triple Jump, the 2nd best in the state. For the boys, Dan Engel of Harrisburg accomplished the 100-400 double, winning in 11.10 and 48.94. John Fudge of Simon Gratz unleashed the top PA 110 Hurdles effort, winning in 14.31. Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Erie McDowell Invitational @ McDowell High School - Surprise! Sheena Gordon wins four events. And all four were among the best in the country. Her biggest improvement on the season at this meet came in the Long Jump, when she went 18-11. She passed 40', going 41-01 in the Triple Jump. Her High Jump didn't beat her season best, but 5-09 will win a lot of meets. And of course with that leaping ability, running the 100 Hurdles in 14.54 comes quite naturally. Jessica Perry of Peters Township hit a nice race, taking the 3200 in 10:53.50, and taking the 1600 in a fast 5:05.10. Dan Mazzocco didn't win four, but his 1600-3200 double was equally impressive as Gordon's performance. His 9:15.67 and 4:17.57 show him to be rounding into shape, and gaining strength. Andy Weilacher of Eisenhower continued his comeback, finiishing 7th in 9:49.1. Mount Lebanon may be one of the few teams to push North Penn at States. Their 7:57.54 came without challenge. And Shawn Culligan of Bradford captured the 110 Hurdles in 14.65, and the 300 Hurdles in 39.17. Results.

Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Springfield (Delco) Invitational @ Springfield High School - On a glorious (but dehydrating) kind of day, hundreds of southeastern PA athletes converged on Springfield, Delaware County and launched some strong performances. West Chester Henderson's Danielle Horgan moved up the 800 charts, going 2:21.4 to capture the 800. Running on her home track, Ann Marie Regan went 5;21.8 for 1600. Proving that you can win from any heat, the Springfield (Delco) girls took the 4x100 in 52.4, to win by .1 over the top team in the final heat, O.J. Roberts. Three girls' teams broke 10:00 in the 4x800, West Chester Henderson (pictured)- (9:47.3), West Chester East (9:53.7), and Unionville (9:58.5). Kelly Looby of Ridley was a double champ, taking the Long Jump (16-04.50) and the Triple Jump (32-06.00). Heather Allen of Haverford was just slightly below her Penn Relays Shot Put, going 34-00.50. Lauren Luci of the host team, won the Discus with a toss of 100-11.00, while Methacton's Kristen Brandon took the Javelin with a throw of 101-09.00. Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Stanley Morgan Invitational @ Carlisle High School - Jamal James, the Central Dauphin sprinting soph, took two races, the 100 in 11.17, and the 200 in 22.58. Cumberland Valley sophomore Brian Fuller hit some rare air as he went 4:21.92 to win the 1600, edging senior teammate Mark Turner, who went 4:23.03. Cedar Cliff's John Butler ran a fast 3200 in 9:27.72. Hurdle specialis James Hipolit of Manheim Township took the shorter distance in 15.22 and the 300 in 39.88. Dane Miller enjoyed Friday's 2nd place finish at the Penn Relays so much, he threw again on Saturday, going 57-04.00 to win the Carlisle event by over five feet. For the girls, Warwick's Shannon Norris took the 100 in 12.29 and the 200 in 25.22. Teammate Ganne Way, a junior, went 2:17.99 to win a fast 800 over Exeter's Thuy Nguyen,2:18.03. They reversed order in the 400, with Nguyen edging Way by .38, going 59.02. In the 1600, Renee Spangler of Manheim Township won in 5:06.63. Red Lion soph Kate Papenberg was 2nd in 5:12.61. Pappenberg took the 32oo in 11;11.12, while Spangler was 3rd at 11:15.40. Chambersburg sophy Kylee Schuler was 2nd in 11:11.95. Not to be outdone by the sophomores, freshman Jessica Kratzer took the Discus with a throw of 118-00.00, was 2nd in the Shot Put at 38-11.00, and 4th in the Javelin, going 112-08.00. Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Gateway Relays @ Gateway High School - Gateway invited many of western PA's top top teams, and then proceeded to win both the boys and girls competitions. The boys margin was wided, but the four point win over a strong North Allegheny team was sure to open some eyes. North Allegheny took seven of 16 events, and Gateway only captured three, but was deeper in more events, placing in the top six in the other 16. Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Lock Haven University High School Classic - Lots of athletes are doubling in the distances. More impressively, many are notching double wins, like Lewisburg's Ashleigh Wetzel, who went 5:06.90 and 11:16.50 in the 1600 and 3200. Saturday, April 27, 2002 - Lebanon County Championships @ Lebanon High School - Sprint star Jaren Hayes helps his team to victory with a win in the 100 (10.8), and anchoring his team's 4x100 to a meet record of43.4. Lebanon set two meet records in the other relays, taking the 4x400 in 3:29.1 and the 4x800 in 8:07.6. Annville-Cleona's Fieldon Daubert won the Shot Put (52-06.50) and the Discus (144-00), while taking 2nd in the Javelin with a throw of 178-10. Cedar Crest's Thomas Jordan took the Jav with his quality throw of 196-04. And Palmyra's Joel Knot took the Triple Jump (42-08) and the High Jump (6-00). Emily Hulme of Cedar Crest led her team to a championship by capturing two individual titles, the 1600 in 5:14.8 and the 3200 in 12:21.8. Friday, April 26, 2002 - Mars Invitational @ Mars High School - Seth Fox of Ford City won the short sprints, taking the 100 in 11.44 and the 200 in 23.44. Hickory's E.J. McClaurin won the two hurdle events, going 15.04 and 39.64. Teammate Dante Marshall won the Long Jump (21-04) and Triple Jump (45-01.75). Other strong performances came from Susan Fletcher of Seneca Valley, 5:16.3 in the 1600; Jesi Christiansen, Greenville, 11:14.4 in the 3200; Juliannna Reed, Hampton, 14.94 in the 100 Hurdles; Melissa Sopher, Slippery Rock, 45.04 in the 300 Hurdles; Britney Humpress, Beaver Falls, 37-07.50 in the Triple Jump; and Ashley Kaufman, Freedom, 132-04 in the Javelin. Wednesday, April 24, 2002 - Midwestern Athletic Conference Championships @ Mars HS - Freedom's Ashley Kaufmann improved her state-leading Javelin mark by over six feet with a toss of 150.09. The Freedom girls took the 4x100 (51.34) and the 4x400 (4:14.6). State high jumpers have a new name to follow with Tyrone Goosby of Beaver Falls, who cleared 6-8 to beat West Allegheny's Chris Nardi by two inches. Running at his home track, Mars' Brad Mueller doubled in the two short sprints, taking the 100 in 11.04 and 22.34 respectively.
